First Day on the Ice Essentials

First Day on the Ice Essentials

Everyone is nervous about their first day on the ice. It can be exciting but also very stressful. Some things that might give you butterflies are:

Am I dressed warm enough? Do I have everything I need on the ice? If this sounds like you or someone you know, then this guide's just for you!

Here are 3 of the TOP ESSENTIALS we think you'll need for your first day:

1. Gloves

Some people choose not to wear gloves on the ice, but the last thing you want is frozen fingers while you're trying to learn the basics of getting across the ice. It will be a lot more enjoyable if you're comfortable and warm.

We recommend this fleece-lined pair that comes in many colors to match your first-day outfit.

2. Skates

The obvious necessity is ice skates. These will be your best friend on the ice, without them you can't really do much of anything. These should fit your feet and ankles enough to provide support and function well. When you're starting out it doesn't need to be too stiff around the ankles where you can't even bend your knees, but they should provide enough firmness to support your ankles. It needs to have some flexibility so you can get used to the feel of the ice.

Our favorite beginner skates:

Riedell 133 Diamond figure skates

Edea Overture Figure Skates

Jackson Classic Soft Skate

3. Jacket and Leggings

This is the most important part of your ice-skating outfit. For figure skating the jacket needs to be warm but functional at the same time and this can be a hard one to balance. If it fits too big it may get in the way of your movements and if it's too small, it may be simply uncomfortable.

For the leggings, it's extremely hard to find one that will go over your skate and stay up on your waist while you skate. These jacket and leggings have been tested by high-level Figure Skaters which is the reason we highly recommend them.

We recommend these two:
